Trying To Control A Criterium / 2020 Tour of South Florida Criterium
I’m not one to watch a ton of race recaps with power overlays because I notice one thing: I just stare at the watts the whole time and think, “oh they’re going hard there!”
Not much learning goes on then and the videos are REALLY LONG.
I’m going to start a new blog post series that will house a bunch of race recap mini’s if we all, the EVOQ.COMMUNITY, decide that they are beneficial for learning.
They will be 15 minutes or less in duration and hopefully focus on one particular lesson or a couple of them.
Let me know if you like these. The time it takes to sync a video with the power file takes way too much time and fiddling for me, so ideally it will be front camera, power file discussion, and my race takeaways. Do we like this format?
Criterium Race Power File Analysis - First 15 Minutes of Race
Goal: With our team holding 1st 2nd and 3rd in GC, we were really trying to keep that podium locked up and also stack a few more guys in the Top 10; make that money.
Strategy: Keep this race fast, and have any non-GC rider cover every single move. Justin and myself were told to mob the front and keep it rolling strong.
Course: 2 climbs that can definitely break things up.
Lesson: Check the video for the full wording on this, but I think our strategy should have been modified a few laps in. The power demands to keep this fast enough to mitigate attacks was too high for two riders to manage. We lost Justin at one point and eventually I let off the gas when a counter attack went up the road with our guys in it.

As you can see, just going Zone 6 over and over again for substantial periods of time.
This is the type of racing that is super hard for me!!
Dive into the video as I talk about the race strategy, as well as look at if our game plan was executed: can we control the race?
